Next Sunday is the Solemnity of Christ the King Year B

    BENEDICT XVI

    ANGELUS

    Saint Peter's Square

    Sunday, 26 November 2006

    Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On this last Sunday of the liturgical year we are celebrating the Solemnity of Christ the King. Today's Gospel proposes to us anew part of the dramatic questioning to which Pontius Pilate subjected Jesus when he was handed over to him, accused of usurping the title, "King of the Jews".

Jesus answered the Roman governor's questions by declaring that he was a king, but not of this world (cf. Jn 18: 36). He did not come to rule over peoples and territories but to set people free from the slavery of sin and to reconcile them with God. And he added: "For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice" (Jn 18: 37).

But what is the "truth" that Christ came into the world to witness to? The whole of his life reveals that God is love: so this is the truth to which he witnessed to the full with the sacrifice of his own life on Calvary.

The Cross is the "throne" where he manifested his sublime kingship as God Love: by offering himself in expiation for the sin of the world, he defeated the "ruler of this world" (Jn 12: 31) and established the Kingdom of God once and for all. It is a Kingdom that will be fully revealed at the end of time, after the destruction of every enemy and last of all, death (cf. I Cor 15: 25-26). The Son will then deliver the Kingdom to the Father and God will finally be "everything to everyone" (I Cor 15: 28).

The way to reach this goal is long and admits of no short cuts: indeed, every person must freely accept the truth of God's love. He is Love and Truth, and neither Love nor Truth are ever imposed: they come knocking at the doors of the heart and the mind and where they can enter they bring peace and joy. This is how God reigns; this is his project of salvation, a "mystery" in the biblical sense of the word: a plan that is gradually revealed in history.

The Virgin Mary was associated in a very special way with Christ's kingship. God asked her, a humble young woman of Nazareth, to become Mother of the Messiah and Mary responded to this request with her whole self, joining her unconditional "yes" to that of her Son, Jesus, and making herself obedient with him even in his sacrifice. This is why God exalted her above every other creature and Christ crowned her Queen of Heaven and earth.

Let us entrust the Church and all humanity to her intercession, so that God's love can reign in all hearts and his design of justice and peace be fulfilled.

Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 4, 2009 – (10/4/2009)

“It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him.”

…from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.

For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.

Sunday October 4 2009 is the Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B

Gn 2:18-24
Ps 128:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6
Heb 2:9-11
Mk 10:2-16 or 10:2-12

Brothers and sisters:
He “for a little while” was made “lower than the angels, “
that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

For it was fitting that he,
for whom and through whom all things exist,
in bringing many children to glory,
should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering.

He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated
all have one origin.

Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them “brothers.”

The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked,
“Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?”

They were testing him.

He said to them in reply, “What did Moses command you?”

They replied,
“Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce
and dismiss her.”

But Jesus told them,
“Because of the hardness of your hearts
he wrote you this commandment.

But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.
For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh.

bible_and__rings
So they are no longer two but one flesh.
Therefore what God has joined together,
no human being must separate.”

In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this.

He said to them,

“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another
commits adultery against her;
and if she divorces her husband and marries another,
she commits adultery.”

And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them,
but the disciples rebuked them.

When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them,

“Let the children come to me;

do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to
such as these.

sheen-three231-thAmen, I say to you,
whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child
will not enter it.”

Then he embraced them and blessed them,
placing his hands on them.

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

 Avoiding jealousy and selfish ambition

“For whoever is not against us is for us.”

“Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.”

Sunday September 27 2009 is the Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B

Nm 11:25-29
Ps 19:8, 10, 12-13, 14
Jas 5:1-6
Mk 9:38-43, 45, 47-48

The LORD came down on a cloud and spoke to Moses and bestowed some of the spirit that was on Moses to seventy elders; and as the spirit came to rest on them, they prophesied. Eldad and Medad were not in the gathering…but they were prophesying. So, when a young man quickly told Moses,
“Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp, “
Joshua, son of Nun, who from his youth had been Moses’ aide, said,
“Moses, my lord, stop them.”
But Moses answered him,
“Are you JEALOUS for my sake?
Would that all the people of the LORD were prophets!
Would that the LORD might bestow his spirit on them all!”In a similar situation, Jesus’ disciples were concerned that an outsider had been casting out demons in Jesus’ name and they tried to prevent him. But, Jesus said…”Do not prevent him.
There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name
who can at the same time speak ill of me.”

Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink
because you belong to Christ,
Amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.

bottle of water

Jesus warns against sins of being injust, malicious, and intolerant of others outside the camp because of jealousy and selfish ambition.  ”Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,
millstoneit would be better for him if a great millstone

were put around his neckand he were thrown into the sea.If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.
It is better for you to enter into life maimed
than with two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut if off.  It is better for you to enter into life crippled than with two feet to be thrown into Gehenna. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.

Better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye

than with two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna, where ‘their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.’”

The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.
The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul; the decree of the LORD is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the LORD are true, all of them just. Though your servant is careful of them, very diligent in keeping them, yet who can detect failings? Cleanse me from my unknown faults! From wanton sin especially, restrain your servant; let it not rule over me. Then shall I be blameless and innocent of serious sin.

Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus-with-child
September 20, 2009 – (9/20/2009)

“If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.”

“Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.”

Sunday September 20 2009 is the Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B

Wis 2:12, 17-20

Ps 54:3-4, 5, 6 and 8

Jas 3:16-4:3

Mk 9:30-37

For if the just one be the son of God, God will defend him
and deliver him from the hand of his foes.

The Lord upholds my life.
Behold, God is my helper;
the Lord sustains my life.
Freely will I offer you sacrifice;
I will praise your name, O LORD, for its goodness.Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist,
there is disorder and every foul practice.
But the wisdom from above is first of all pure,
then peaceable, gentle, compliant,
full of mercy and good fruits,
without inconstancy or insincerity.

And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace
for those who cultivate peace.

Jesus was teaching his disciples and telling them,
“The Son of Man is to be handed over to men
and they will kill him,
and three days
after his death
the Son of Man will rise.”

But they did not understand the saying,
and they were afraid to question him.

The disciples had been discussing among themselves
who was the greatest.
Then Jesus sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them,
“If anyone wishes to be first,
he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.”
Taking a child,
he placed it in the their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them,

“Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me;
and whoever receives me,
receives not me but the One who sent me.”

“But who do YOU say I AM?”

“You are the Messiah”

Demonstrate Your Faith
Faith of itself,
if it does not have works, is dead.faithwithoutworksdead

Indeed someone might say,

You have

faith

and I have

works.

Demonstrate your faith to me without works,
and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that the Sacrament of Confirmation “gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly and never to be ashamed of the Cross.” (see CCC-303)

To be a totally committed disciple of Christ takes great sacrifice.  There is a cross to bear in rejecting the ways of the world which is so much in contradiction to the teachings of Jesus.

followtheleaderThe reward for picking up the cross and following Jesus is true happiness and eternal life.
